greasing the groove again

written 1st August 2026

Now and then I lie awake at night wondering if I should update my website. I have things to say. I really do. I write notes, I talk to my wife, I interact on other social media, I yap on Discord, I write blog posts elsewhere under other identities. None of those have my real name on it. All of them are either completely ephemeral, or live on timelines that will have more and more posts scrolled on top of them. In those media, there is no such thing as a blank page. A conversation follows on from what was said before, even if it was just “hi”.

Some things I’m thinking about:

Greasing the groove is a concept from weightlifting - do a lot of sets with low reps, with huge gaps of time between them, over the course of each day, to a level that does not exhaust your muscles/tendons/etc. The thinking behind this is that being strong is in part a process of neurological adaptation. As you get stronger, your muscles are in effect learning to move more weight with less effort. The goal here is to do as many sets as possible over the week. It seems like there’s some overlap between how we think about improving cognition and how we think about improving physical strength. We all know that practice makes perfect when it comes to writing, playing an instrument, programming, etc. See in reverse: Brain Training.
